Assistance to Young Diabetics
The Egyptian Society for Diabetes Care E.S.D.C. is an NGO established in November 2000 and registered at the Egyptian Ministry of Social Affairs under reference 436/2000. The president of the board is Ms. Laila El Sioufi and its members include the most eminent Pediatric Endocrinologists in Egypt. “Assistance to Young Diabetics” “AYD” is an E.S.D.C. program currently dealing with the Therapeutic Education of youngsters with diabetes and their families, development plans are underway to include an educational program for all insulin dependent diabetics.
In 2005 A.Y.D. was awarded the International DAWN (Diabetes Attitudes Wishes and Needs) prize for its successful program as well as the cooperation established with the French Association A.J.D. (Aide au Jeunes Diabetiques). A.J.D. France was founded in 1956 and has acquired a vast experience in the communication of knowledge to youngsters, their families and healthcare professionals dealing with diabetes.

The Vision: Awareness of Diabetes, medical care, coupled with education and medical prevention initiatives indicate potential ways for cost-effective healthcare planning. These services represent high return investments in health costs and better quality of the life for thousands of people. Based on a conservative estimation there are 40 000 youngsters with diabetes in Egypt. A.Y.D sets itself the target to reach out and train 13 000 youngsters over a 5 year period empowering them to know, handle and control their diabetes, enjoying better lives, devoid of health complications. In addition, A.Y.D. also aims at developing awareness of Diabetes among healthcare professionals, its possible consequences if not attended to and the necessity of guided diabetes care and therapeutic education for all kids suffering from diabetes.
The Mission: Psycho-social factors can influence a young person’s ability to adhere to a diabetes management plan. The mission of AYD Egypt is to:

Increase awareness among the general population of the rights of young people with diabetes.

Make age-appropriate education as well as adequate care, accessible to these young people and their families.

Implement the St. Vincent Declaration, which sets out internationally accepted recommendations for the detection and management of diabetes.

Teach and educate children, adolescents and their families how to establish patterns of life-long Diabetes management.
